There are so many ways to update your space without ever opening up a bucket of paint or even going to the store! Today I want to share one of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways that you can update any space inside your home, usually by using items that you already have...creating vignettes!
So… what exactly is a vignette? A vignette is a small grouping of objects that creates a pop of interest or focal point within your space. Think of it like creating a lovely still-life piece of art in your home. You can create vignettes on tabletops, bookshelves, mantels, wall shelves, and other flat surfaces throughout your home by creating a thoughtful display composed of different types of items. Some great items to consider when creating a vignette are greenery pots, lamps, vases, picture frames, sculptures or figurines, or candles. But you can choose any decorative items that make you happy and that you'd like to have on display!
Here are some tips to creating the perfect vignette:
Mix Textures.
When you're creating a vignette, you'll want to be sure to select items that have different textures - think of the organic texture of plants, the smooth and sleek texture of a mirror, and the coarse and grainy texture of wood. Pairing items that have different textures together in this way helps to add to the visual interest of your vignette and make it a powerful statement in your space.
Mix Heights and Sizes of Objects.
Another thing to keep in mind when creating your vignette is to mix objects of different heights and sizes. Curating a variety of objects of different sizes, shapes, and varying heights will allow you to display your items in a way that naturally leads your eye around the vignette. By using a combination of taller and shorter items, you can create depth within the vignette by placing shorter items in the front and taller items in the back making for even more visual interest. If you're looking to create some extra height within your vignette, consider setting objects on top of a small stack of books or a log slice to raise it up.
Group Items In Odd Numbers.
When creating your vignette, consider using an odd number of items (groupings of 3 or 5 items are my favorite). It is also important to remember that less is often times more. As we introduce more items into our display, there is a tendency for things to get lost within the visual and for your vignette to feel more like a cluttered collection than a beautiful focal point. By choosing a smaller collection of items, we are able to focus more on the beautiful uniqueness of each piece and create a more polished grouping.
Group Items Close Together.
Be sure that when styling your vignettes that you group your items close together to eliminate a scattered or cluttered look. A great way to anchor your groupings is by placing them thoughtfully on a tray, shallow basket, or placemat, or even styling them in front of or around a mirror or art piece. This gives your vignette a sense of purpose within the space rather than the appearance of a messy surface.
Be Considerate Of Color.
Finally, as you gather items to create your vignettes, pay attention to the colors of your pieces - do they fit with the style of the room? We want to make sure that our groupings seamlessly fit in and enhance the space. However - don't shy away from throwing in unexpected pieces that you love or that have sentimental value to you. This is the best way to create a vignette that makes you smile!
Here are a few other items to consider when creating your vignettes:
Small clocks, stacks of books, mirrors, wreaths, small lamps, lanterns, bowls, plates, baskets or crates, artwork, jewelry boxes, stylish containers, pitchers, small trunks, pinecones, pumpkins, sticks, florals, branches, or rocks.
